Wear Socks With Clogs: Bare Feet Raise the Risk of Athlete’s Foot
Clogs are covered with holes, so it feels natural to assume that they must be highly breathable. If they let in so much air, wearing them barefoot should feel cooler and make athlete’s foot less likely.
My advice is the opposite:
If you wear clogs for long periods, or if your feet sweat easily, wear socks. Prolonged barefoot use makes it easier to create the kind of environment that athlete’s foot fungi prefer.
One distinction matters from the start: clogs do not create athlete’s foot out of nowhere. Athlete’s foot, medically known as tinea pedis, is an infection caused by dermatophytes. Infection can occur only after exposure to the fungi.
But when the inside of a shoe stays warm and damp, and friction has caused tiny breaks in the skin, the fungi gain better conditions in which to survive and invade.
Put simply:
Athlete’s foot is not caused by stuffiness alone, but heat and moisture help the fungi remain on the foot.
Holes do not guarantee dry feet
The holes are the most misleading feature of clogs.
They do improve airflow in certain areas, but they cannot absorb sweat or guarantee that the sole and spaces between the toes remain dry. The footbed is still one continuous, non-absorbent surface, and the sole of the foot is a major area of perspiration.
For example, Crocs describes Croslite, the material used in its genuine footwear, as a proprietary closed-cell resin. Materials of this kind are light, water-resistant, and easy to clean, but they do not absorb sweat like fabric.
The American Academy of Dermatology also warns that shoes made from synthetic materials such as plastic and rubber are more likely to cause sweating. It recommends keeping the feet dry, wearing socks made from natural or quick-drying, moisture-wicking fabrics, and changing socks whenever they become wet.
The useful question is therefore not how many holes the shoe has. It is this:
After several hours, are the sole and spaces between the toes still dry, or have they become damp?
International research supports the importance of the in-shoe environment
Japanese dermatologist Yukio Sasagawa observed 420 outpatients and measured the temperature, humidity, and dew point inside their footwear.
People with tinea pedis had higher average in-shoe temperature and humidity. Tinea pedis was also more common among people whose footwear had higher temperature, humidity, and dew point. Sasagawa concluded that the internal environment of footwear is itself a risk factor for tinea pedis. The study appeared in The Journal of Dermatology.
The study identified approximately 75% in-shoe humidity as a statistical cut-off associated with risk and defined at least 32°C and 80% humidity as a high-temperature, high-humidity environment. But this was a single-center observational study. These numbers should not be treated as universal thresholds at which every person will develop an infection.
The broader finding is what matters: the hotter and wetter the shoe becomes, the more seriously we should take the risk of tinea pedis.
Another group at Showa University used human heel stratum corneum in an experimental model. At 35°C and nearly saturated humidity, dermatophytes penetrated the stratum corneum within one day. When the skin surface had already been slightly abraded, penetration occurred even sooner.
The researchers also found that timely washing removed most fungal elements still attached to the skin surface. The experiment is indexed by PubMed.
This helps explain the three conditions that matter when clogs are worn barefoot for long periods:
- foot sweat keeps the inside of the shoe damp;
- the footwear stays on long enough for exposure to continue;
- friction creates tiny, easily overlooked injuries to the skin.
No single condition guarantees infection. When all three occur together, however, the risk naturally rises.
Socks do more than absorb sweat
The first function of socks is to absorb or move away some perspiration, reducing the amount that remains directly against the sole and toes.
The second is to create a buffer between the skin and the shoe, reducing repeated friction.
The third is to provide a physical barrier that can be changed and washed every day.
Researchers at Tokyo Medical and Dental University tested whether socks could prevent dermatophytes from passing from the surface of sandals to the feet. Cotton socks and Japanese tabi socks were effective barriers, while very thin nylon stockings were not. The study appeared in The Journal of Dermatology.
Wearing socks is therefore not merely adding an unnecessary layer. A clean, suitable pair that can be changed promptly addresses sweat, friction, and contamination at the same time.
Socks are not magic, however. If they become soaked and remain on the foot for hours, they can hold moisture against the skin.
A more accurate rule than “socks make everything safe” is:
Wear moisture-absorbing or moisture-wicking socks, and change them as soon as they become damp.
Chinese dermatologists have reached the same practical conclusion
In an interview with People’s Daily, Zhuang Kaiwen, an associate chief physician in dermatology and venereology at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, explained that only the holes in clogs provide ventilation. The plastic or rubber body of the shoe itself is not breathable.
He had treated a patient who routinely commuted in clogs, had walked through standing water in them, and did not clean them promptly. The patient later developed redness, scaling, erosion, and itching between the toes and was diagnosed with a fungal infection.

The guidance is consistent with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC explains that fungi associated with tinea pedis thrive in warm, dark, and moist environments, and that keeping the feet and toes dry while changing shoes and socks regularly can help prevent or control the infection.
A more practical way to wear clogs
If you wear clogs briefly and your feet barely sweat, going barefoot once does not necessarily create a problem.
But for commuting, travel, shopping, or any situation in which the shoes remain on for several hours, I recommend the following:
- Wear thin socks that absorb or wick moisture. Cotton, natural-fiber, and quick-drying performance socks can all work. The key is not leaving wet fabric against the skin.
- Change socks when they become damp. Do not rely on a fixed “four-hour rule.” Whether the sole and spaces between the toes are wet is a more useful guide.
- Act immediately after wading through water. Remove the shoes and socks, wash the feet, dry carefully between the toes, rinse the shoes, and allow them to dry completely.
- Rotate footwear. If the inside of one pair is noticeably damp, wear another pair the following day and let the first one dry thoroughly.
- Clean the inside regularly. Pay attention to the footbed, inner walls, contact areas under the sole, and the edges of the holes. Let the shoes dry fully before wearing them again.
- Wash the feet daily and dry between the toes. Research indicates that timely washing helps remove fungi that have not yet penetrated the skin.
- Do not share shoes or socks. Athlete’s foot can spread through contaminated footwear, socks, towels, and communal surfaces.
If the skin between the toes remains white, scaly, itchy, or eroded, or if the sole repeatedly becomes thick and flaky, do not assume that it is simply dry skin. Eczema, contact dermatitis, and other conditions can resemble athlete’s foot. A dermatologist can perform a fungal examination when necessary.
Conclusion
Clogs do not directly cause athlete’s foot, but they are not as automatically breathable as they appear.
The holes allow some airflow, but they cannot absorb perspiration. During prolonged barefoot wear, sweat, friction, shed skin, and outside contamination remain directly between the foot and the shoe. People who sweat easily, wear clogs for long periods, or fail to deal promptly with wet footwear should be particularly careful.
My conclusion remains straightforward:
It is better to wear socks with clogs, especially if you will wear them for a long time or your feet sweat easily.
Effective prevention is not complicated:
Wear suitable socks and change them when they get wet. Do not leave the feet enclosed for too long. Clean dirty shoes promptly and let them dry completely.
Clogs may not cause athlete’s foot on their own. But if they are always worn barefoot, remain sweaty, and are rarely cleaned, they can easily become the kind of environment that dermatophytes prefer.
