Do Not Factory Reset HomePod First: Restart, Remove Accessory, Then Restore

When HomePod misbehaves, do not jump straight to factory reset.

Unresponsiveness, setup problems, Wi-Fi changes, service, resale, and giving it away are different situations. Mixing restart, reset, and restore wastes time.

The HomePod order should be: restart first, reset next, and use computer restore only for HomePod mini when needed.

First try restart

If HomePod only occasionally stops responding, first try restarting it in the Home app.

If the Home app does not show a restart option, or HomePod still does not respond, unplug it from power and plug it back in.

This fits:

  1. Occasional non-response.
  2. Siri not responding.
  3. Playback glitches.
  4. Unstable Home app status.

If you are not selling, giving away, or fully unlinking the device, do not erase it first.

Reset in the Home app

If you need factory settings, Apple recommends trying the Home app first:

  1. Sign in on iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the Apple Account used to set up HomePod.
  2. Open the Home app.
  3. Select HomePod.
  4. Open settings.
  5. Choose Reset HomePod.
  6. Choose Remove Accessory.

If a white spinning light appears, wait until it disappears. That means reset is complete.

This is best when the HomePod still appears in the Home app.

Manual reset

If you cannot reset in the Home app:

  1. Unplug HomePod, or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini.
  2. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Wait another 10 seconds.
  5. Touch and hold the top of HomePod.
  6. A white spinning light appears. Keep holding.
  7. The light turns red and Siri says HomePod is about to reset.
  8. After three beeps, lift your finger.

Do not lift your finger when the red light first appears. Wait for the three beeps.

HomePod mini can be restored with a computer

HomePod mini is different from regular HomePod because it can connect to a computer over USB-C.

Use this when HomePod mini cannot be reset through the Home app or manually.

Steps:

  1. Connect HomePod mini to the computer with its USB-C cable.
  2. On Mac, open Finder.
  3. On Windows, open the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
  4. Select HomePod mini and choose Restore HomePod.

Restore resets the device and updates it to the latest software. Set it up again afterward.

Scope

This article checks the steps against Apple Support’s Reset HomePod or HomePod mini page. Interfaces may vary by software version and Home app release. Use Apple’s current page and your device prompts as the final reference.
